Turns out that October isn’t just spooky season; it’s also Dental Hygiene Month! So, there’s truly no better time to implement solid oral care habits that will benefit you now and for years to come. If you’re unsure where to begin, don’t worry – you can read on for a few ways to keep your smile healthy.

Follow the 2-2 Rule When Brushing

Simply put, dampening the bristles of your toothbrush with some water and quickly scrubbing your teeth doesn’t cut it. To effectively remove food particles, plaque, and other debris from your mouth, you need to follow the 2-2 rule, which means brushing for two full minutes twice a day. It’s also important to use the right tools, including a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste.

Commit to Flossing Daily

Of course, even if you brush properly, it’s likely that there will still be plaque along your gumline or food particles between your teeth. That’s why you need to floss! If you have difficulty making this a habit because it’s cumbersome and time-consuming, try using a water flosser or pre-threaded floss. These tools can help the process go significantly faster.

Be Mindful of Your Consumption of Added Sugar

Cutting back on sugar during a month known for treats like pumpkin spice lattes and Halloween candy may seem like an impossible ask. Don’t worry – you can still indulge on occasion. When you do, make sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly with clean water afterward. Then, about 20 minutes later, brush your teeth. Remember, sugar is one of the leading causes of cavities, so you need to commit to a solid oral hygiene routine to prevent cavities from developing throughout the holiday season.

Schedule Your Next Dental Checkup and Cleaning

Even with a solid oral hygiene regimen in place, you need to visit your dental team twice a year for a checkup and cleaning. That way, we can screen for tooth decay and cavities while also removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. Plus, we can provide you with specific recommendations on how to improve your oral hygiene routine in order to keep your smile in tip-top shape!
