Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids

Child receiving dental checkup and teeth cleaning from children's dentist

Just like adults, children should periodically have their teeth examined and cleaned to prevent cavities and other major dental health issues. Our dental office offers a very personal, welcoming environment thanks to our caring team members who treat patients like family; we’ll help your little one feel safe and comfortable during their visit. While we’re checking for tooth decay and gum disease, we can also make sure that your child’s oral development is on track and give them a few tips for taking care of their smile at home.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride lets us stop cavities from spreading without a dental drill. If you have any children that are suffering from decay but are afraid of the noise of a drill, we may offer silver diamine fluoride as a solution. The liquid substance helps remineralize the enamel while also killing the bacteria responsible for wearing the teeth down. This treatment has been shown to stop around 80% of cavities, and it can be completed in less than one minute without any pain.

Fluoride Treatments

Regular fluoride exposure greatly lowers your child’s risk for tooth decay. This can be especially important while they still have their baby teeth; after all, you don’t want any teeth to come out of the mouth before they’re supposed to. At the end of your child’s dental checkup and cleaning, we may recommend applying some concentrated fluoride gel or varnish to their enamel so that they don’t come back with cavities in six months.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

More than half of children will have a cavity by age 6. If your child is unlucky enough to experience tooth decay at a young age, call us right away. Once we’ve stopped the decay from spreading, we can apply a tooth-colored filling to replace the part of the tooth that has already been lost. The filling will be made out of composite resin that bonds directly with the child’s tooth, supporting it from within; the material can be shaded to blend in with the rest of the enamel so that your child’s peers most likely won’t even notice that it’s there.

Athletic Mouthguards

For the sports player in your family, we can create customized athletic mouthguards. We recommend mouthguards for all recreational physical activities, especially sports where patients’ smiles may come in contact with other players, hard surfaces, or sports equipment. Mouthguards can protect your athlete’s teeth and prevent orofacial trauma. The leading cause of tooth loss in people under the age of 25 is sports-related trauma, so protecting smiles during sporting events is essential. Over-the-counter mouthguards are available, but they are typically less comfortable and may cause unnecessary strain on the jaw.
