What Are Implant Dentures?

An implant denture is not like a traditional denture that rests directly on the gums. Instead, it is attached to a number of implant posts that have been carefully placed in strategic parts of the jaw. Thanks to the implant posts, you can rest assured that your dentures will always stay in place while you’re eating or speaking.
Implant dentures come in two varieties: fixed and removable. Here is a closer look at the differences between these two options.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
A fixed implant denture usually requires about 4 to 8 implant posts. The prosthesis can be removed by a dental expert, but otherwise it will always stay in your mouth. You can brush and floss a fixed implant denture the same way you would your natural teeth, making it easy to take care of.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures usually only call for 2 to 5 implant posts, so they may be a good fit for those with less bone density in their jaws. You will be able to take the prosthesis out of your mouth at any time, and you’ll need to do so in order to properly clean it.
The Implant Denture Process

At an initial consultation, we’ll confirm whether dental implants are a good choice for you. If they are, we can refer you to a local specialist who can place the implant posts in your jaw. After the posts have fused with the bone around them, abutments can be attached. During the final phase of the treatment, you’ll return to our office so that we can design and place your new denture.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures are typically recommended for those who have lost most or all of the teeth in their upper or lower jaws. To qualify for the procedure, you need to have an overall healthy mouth (meaning no gum disease or other untreated oral health issues) and plenty of bone density in your jaw. We can determine whether you’re a viable candidate for implant dentures once we’ve thoroughly examined your mouth during your initial consultation.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Why do so many dentists highly recommend implant dentures as a solution for tooth loss? The answer lies in the many benefits that the treatment has to offer:
- The implant posts can provide the stimulation that’s needed to prevent bone loss in the jaw.
- The dentures are carefully designed to look as lifelike as possible, which can help you feel more comfortable about the way your smile looks.
- The chewing power provided by the implant posts is enough to handle virtually any kind of food without issue.
- It’s possible for implant dentures to last for decades with good maintenance.
